Imagine stretching a rubber band. As you pull on it, you create tension. When you release it, that stored force causes it to contract. Steel tendons behave similarly. When the steel is stretched, it is placed in tension. After it is released, the tension in the steel transfers to the surrounding concrete as compression. This pre-compression helps offset future tensile forces that develop in the concrete, so that even when the concrete experiences tension under loading, the net force remains in compression, reducing the likelihood of cracking.

We will typically utilize Ground-Penetrating Radar or electromagnetic sensors to locate the active tendons inside of the concrete. We want to do this to ensure we don’t compromise the concrete slab nor can any hazardous recoil. 

Concrete Removal

After we have located our tendon cables, damaged concrete is carefully removed to expose the affected post-tension components. Any damaged portion of the tendons will be cut & removed and a new post tension cable is connected; this process is also called tendon splicing. 

Post Tension Process

The process consists of removing the tendon and measuring its length to locate the damaged section. Determine the required concrete saw-cut location to expose the tendon. Excavate the area, remove the damaged tendon, splice in a new tendon section, replace the anchorage components, and re-stress the tendon per project specifications.

So, let’s look at our steps again:

  • Inspect the damage and find which tendons are damaged
  • Expose the tendon by removing the surrounding concrete
  • Determine if the tendon needs to be replaced; if part of the cable tendon broke off, then, it’ll need to be replaced
  • Detension the cable safely if required.
  • Install a splice or replace the damaged tendon.
  • Restress the tendon to the specified force using hydraulic equipment.
  • Restore corrosion protection and patch the concrete.
  • Perform a final inspection to verify the repair.

 

Because post-tension tendons are under very high tension, repairs should only be performed by qualified post-tension specialists under the supervision of a structural engineer.
